Overview of Little Ridges Nursery

Green Ridge offers Nursery provision, known as ‘Little Ridges’ to the following ages of children:

  • Little Acorns - for children whose fourth birthday falls between 1st September 2019 and the 31st August 2020
  • Little Berries – for children who are aged two/three

Little Acorns – three/four-year old provision

Little Acorns has one major intake in September, for those children who turn four within the academic year 2019/2020.

  • The September intake will be staggered over the first 2 to 3 weeks of term.
  • Any spare places will be allocated during the year, as they become available.
  • Places within the Little Acorns are reserved for children who are already in the setting as part of our 2/3-year-old provision (Little Berries).

Children who due to have their fourth birthday between 1st September 2019 and 31st August 2020 are eligible for 15 hours’ free childcare.  15-hour provision is offered as five sessions of three hours (combination of morning or afternoon across the week).  For those parents/carers eligible for the 30 hours’ free childcare, this will mean that your child is attending fulltime between 8.45am and 3.15pm daily.

A daily lunch club operates where children bring their own packed lunches and have these together as a group.  For those parents/carers only eligible for 15 hours’ childcare, there will be the option of paying separately for your child to either stay on or come in earlier and have lunch at school between 11.45-12.15pm, before or after the morning/afternoon session which your child attends.  The nursery is currently working with the academy catering team to see if there is the option for hot meals to be served for Little Ridges nursery children, where an additional fee will apply.  At the time of going to print, this is not yet available.

The academy will admit no more than 52 children into the Nursery each academic year (26 for the morning sessions, and 26 for the afternoon sessions). Please note that places may be reduced if:

  • The academy needs to respond to any needs that arise with each cohort; and/or
  • Those children eligible for 30 hours’ free childcare remain all day, and so take up one place in the morning as well as the afternoon.

With part time applicants, parents will be asked for a preference. Places are offered based on availability and a preference cannot be guaranteed. If a preferred session is not available an alternative will be offered.

For those children who are eligible for the 15 hours’ free childcare but not the 30 hours, sessions can still be applied for in Little Acorns privately, but note that the places each year are offered initially to those children who are eligible for the 30 hours funding.  Prices for Nursery can be found in Appendix 1 if your child attends with us privately.

Parents will need to include provide an eligibility code for the 30 hours Free Entitlement; the school will not be able to confirm a 30-hour place until the code has been validated by Buckinghamshire County Council. 

Anyone may apply for admission to the Nursery for their child(ren). If there are more applications than places available, the academy will allocate places in the following priority order: (Rules should be read in conjunction with the accompanying notes).

 The Foundation Stage Learning Journal/Profile

Throughout the day, your child will be ‘observed’. This means that we closely follow your child’s actions, behaviour (and where possible and where appropriate, conversations) to help us to assess what they know and what they can do.  These observations will largely be completed by either your child’s class teacher or lead learner but there may be times where they are also observed by other members of the EYFS team.  So that we can plan the next steps in the children’s learning, some observations are carried out during adult-led activities, where your child will be encouraged to talk about the activity, and some observations will be carried out during child-initiated learning.  Here, we do not always ask questions, as this can interrupt their learning.  We often use technology (such as cameras or iPads) to capture a child’s learning and these images/videos are kept in the child’s learning journey online (Tapestry).  We encourage parents/carers to upload any home learning/achievements to share in class.  The profile is a working document, which is updated and used to discuss with you at parent consultation evenings.  It also forms the basis of your child’s end of year report.

Parents/Carers as Partners

A child’s achievement and happiness is greatly enhanced when the parents and nursery work together in their child’s education.  Effective home/ nursery communication is vital in ensuring your child settles into nursery and is content.  Parents can help reinforce teacher expectations by:

  • Helping your child talk about their experiences (by using the Tapestry programme/App as a stimulus)
  • Appreciating the effort made by your child to produce a painting or model.
  • Encouraging your child to talk about their learning and successes.

Transfer from Little Acorns to Reception

  • All parents and carers must be made aware that a place in the nursery does not guarantee a place in the school and that they must still go through the Buckinghamshire County Council co-ordinated admissions procedure.
  • The Nursery staff will liaise closely with colleagues in Reception classes to plan for a smooth transition to their chosen or allocated school. Nursery staff will send on reports and other agreed records to the school admitting the pupil as appropriate.
  • Children moving into the school Reception class will visit in small transition groups during the end of the summer term.
  • Children attending other schools will have all records passed onto the school and staff at the new school will be offered opportunities to visit children in the nursery.

Behaviour and Attitudes in Nursery

Behaviour Charter

At Green Ridge, we have established our behaviour charter.  These are key beliefs and fundamental expectations to how children behave which apply to all children, and have been created in a way that can be understand and recognized by all children, even from the youngest age.

Core Values

Green Ridge has six core value which underpin all aspects of academy life.  Through assemblies and throughout the curriculum these values make explicit the values for life which children will need to recognise and show:

  • Respect

These values go hand-in-hand with a range of other values which children will encounter and learn about at Green Ridge during their time within the academy.  For example, gratitude will link closely with humility, and honesty will link closely with trust.  Children will explore a range of values, although particular attention will be given to the six-core value listed above.  Children will be articulate in discussing these values and their meaning not only in the academy, but for their lives in general and implications.

Uniform

Purchasing uniform

  • We have dedicated uniform suppliers: Bucks School Wear Plus. They can provide all items which are compulsory (jumper, T-shirt and book-bag).

Additional uniform and equipment information

  • Long hair (shoulder length and beyond) must be tied back at all times.
  • We do not expect children to wear any kind of jewellery in nursery.
  • Children with pierced ears should wear simple plain studs.

Non-uniform – but important

  • A pair of wellies, clearly named, to be kept in school
  • A waterproof with a hood – even in summer – the children play outside whatever the weather and they need to have appropriate outdoor clothing
  • A warm coat, mittens, hat and scarf for when it is cold
  • Sun cream – please do not bring this to school but make sure you have applied sun cream to your child in the morning before they come to school in hot, sunny weather

Care, guidance and support

Pastoral care

  • We aim to create an atmosphere where each child feels s/he has a contribution to make.
  • The academy is small enough for children to be known by all staff and every member of staff has a responsibility for pastoral care.
  • The staff are always alert to any unusual changes in mood or character and any child experiencing difficulties because of something at school or home has appropriate help.
  • We appreciate receiving information from parents (of which we may be unaware) which may have an effect on children’s learning and stability.

Safeguarding children (child protection)

  • The nursery has a responsibility to work with other agencies to safeguard and promote the welfare of all children.
  • If concerns are raised within the nursery or a child or parent reports a situation involving possible abuse, we would not be able to guarantee confidentiality as we are duty bound to refer such matters to Social Services, in line with Local Authority procedures.
  • The Headteacher and a nominated school governor have the responsibility to oversee that all necessary procedures are in place to ensure that children are safe.
  • Adults working with children in an unsupervised situation (out of the classroom) are subject to rigorous Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS, formerly CRB) checks.
  • New staff are recruited in line with safer recruiting procedures.

Personal/social development

  • As an academy, we are aware of the many other non-academic factors that contribute to a balanced education.
  • The academy PSHE and Citizenship curriculum includes P4C (Philosophy for Children) where children are taught about generating questions, leading discussions and accepting the views and ideas with their peers.
  • In all aspects of school, your child will be helped to develop as a caring, thoughtful individual.
